A proud KabuVerdiana hailing from New Bedford\, Massachusetts\, Candida Rose is dedicated to studying and educating about the transnational musical legacy of Cabo Verdean Americans; she has published a book on this topic\, KabuMerikanus – the Sum of US\, based on original research for which she received a Master’s degree in Transnational\, Cultural\, and Community Studies from UMass Boston. Candida’s educational efforts have received national attention through a feature on PBS’s No Passport Required; her scholarship on Cabo Verdean women in music was published in a scholarly edited collection\, Kriolas Poderozas; and her research travels to Cabo Verde are the topic of a forthcoming documentary film directed by Dr. Rosalyn Negrón\, called Candida. Candida works creatively in the medium of sound\, and has released two studio albums: KabuMerikana: The Sum of ME and Here I AM!. KabuMerikana brings Candida’s deep knowledge of Cabo Verdean genres like the slow\, lilting morna and the polyrhythmic batuku and her training in jazz musicianship into an exciting fusion that she calls “KabuJazz.” Here I AM!\, released in 2023\, reflects on Candida’s spiritual journey through a sonic exploration of various cultural traditions\, such as R&B\, jazz\, and world music. She has performed with Cabo Verdean stars like Maria de Barros and Tiny Tavares and appeared onstage at the 2014 Kriol Jazz Festival in Cabo Verde. As an entrepreneur\, Candida spearheads Golden Rose Music LLC\, through which she continues to share the healing power of music at nursing homes and retirement villages\, as she has done for nearly 18 years. DESCRIPTION:Maria Hendricks – Cultural and Language Consultant\n\n\n\n\nUnCommon Corner\, Boylston St &\, Tremont St\, Boston\, MA 02116\n\n\n\nLovely Hoffman is an award-winning musical theatre performer\, singer/songwriter\, and educator.  In 2017\, Lovely released her single\, My Black Is Beautiful\, a song about self-love\, self-acceptance\, and Black pride\, which went viral and reached #45 on the Adult Contemporary Radio Charts. She is celebrated for her impactful songs that hold deep cultural significance in the Black community\, including “A Kwanzaa Song\,” “Black Lives Matter\,” and “Juneteenth.” Lovely Hoffman is also an actress and received the IRNE Award for Best Actress in a Musical for portraying Celie in the New England premiere of “The Color Purple.” She has been honored with the Elliot Norton Award and was part of the ensemble that received the Best Ensemble recognition for the production of  “Ain’t Misbehavin.”  Lovely has been featured on CNN\, BET\, The Boston Globe\, and Essence Magazine.  Lovely recently graduated from the Harvard Graduate School of Education (Ed.M)\, where she focused on Arts and Learning. DESCRIPTION:A member of Aquinnah Wampanoag tribe of Martha’s Vineyard MA\, performing songwriter Thea Hopkins calls her music Red Roots Americana. She has been described as a “standout writer” by the Washington Post. In the spring of 2024\, Thea attended the ISPA Congress in Perth Australia as a Western Arts Alliance artist delegate. She was an official showcase artist at the International Indigenous Music Summit in June 2023. Thea was a 2023 recipient of an artist award from the Newport Festivals Foundation. Her song\, “The Ghost Of Emmett Till” was the grand prize winner of the Great American Song Contest in 2021.  \n\n\n\nVenues where Thea has performed include Massey Hall (CN)\, Banff Centre For The Arts (CN) Kennedy Center (DC)\, Woody Guthrie Festival (OK)\, the Moseley Folk Festival (UK)\, the Summertyne Americana Festival (UK) and the Bluebird Cafe (TN). Her new album\, “Here In Our World” is scheduled to be released in September 2024. She first came to wider public notice when Peter\, Paul & Mary recorded her song “Jesus Is On The Wire” in 2004\, and then again in 2010 with the Prague Symphony Orchestra.
