Artist Bios


Catherine Bent

Catherine Bent is a multi-style cellist and composer. Her musical versatility is reflected in her diverse resumé which includes recordings, performances and tours with Cirque du Soleil, Joe Jackson, Lee Konitz, Greg Osby, Merce Cunningham Dance, Enya, Kanye West, Rod Stewart, Donna Summer, and poet laureate Robert Pinsky. Catherine is a pioneering cellist in Brazilian choro, widely recognized throughout Brazil as a master of the genre. She is one of few cellists in the world who play forró, the social dance music of the Brazilian Northeast. She is in demand as a teacher and clinician in Brazil and the US, and she is on the faculty of Choro Camp New England. Catherine is an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music.


Rob Curto

Rob Curto is a pianist and accordionist who grew up immersed in Swing Era jazz and became fascinated with Brazilian music in 1998. He became deeply involved in playing Choro and Forró music, living in Brazil from 2001 to 2005, perfecting his craft and performing with master musicians in Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and Recife. In 2004 Rob became a founding member of the group Forró in the Dark, and was essential in bringing Forró to New York City and a broader international audience. Through weekly dance parties in Manhattan’s East Village, he further honed his craft, developing skill in keeping folks dancing and “animando a festa.” Later his group “Rob Curto’s Forró for All” toured extensively throughout the United States and Canada.


Renato Malavasi

Renato Malavasi is a drummer active in the Boston jazz and Brazilian music scene. Alumnus of Berklee College of Music, Renato Malavasi has performed extensively with a wide variety of ensembles and musical styles around the New England area. Additionally, as an educator, he has taught at Tufts University & Berklee Outreach City Music Boston.
